When you break down all the things people need to live a decent healthy life, there really aren’t that many requirements. Enough food, enough water, enough air, and enough sleep. Food, water, and air are obvious. But sleep is still being studied by medical science, and it is still not completely understood. One thing that is certain, though, is that without sufficient sleep every night, you are opening yourself up to host of medical problems.

Food, water and air are very well understood. A low fat, good carbohydrate diet, a water source free from contamination, and air that is not tainted by second hand smoke are all understood to be necessary for proper human health. But what about sleep? How do we know if the sleep we are getting every night is good quality, or bad quality? The truth is that sleep is still a relatively new field of science in western medicine.

They have known for a while that there are different phases of sleep, and that we cycle through each phase as we sleep through the night. What is like the most widely known phase of sleep is rapid eye movement, of REM sleep. This is when dreaming occurs, and even this is not quite understood.

Many things can interfere with our ability to get a good nights rest every night. One of the main conditions which people suffer from is sleep apnea. There are two reasons why apnea symptoms are overlooked. One is that obviously, they occur while we are sleeping, so we don’t usually remember them the next day. Another reason is that they are very similar to a host of other symptoms, such as stress and general anxiety. These include headaches, and general restlessness during the day.

If you suspect you have sleep apnea, many have suggested keeping a sleep journal. When you record everything you can think of as soon as you wake up every morning, this can shed some light on your condition. How often you wake up during the night, the quality of your sleep, and anything else you can think of. The more data you collect, the easier it will be for your doctor to make an accurate diagnosis.

Sleep is vitally important, and without it you will suffer a host of ailments. It is therefore important that you collect the proper data, and see your physician as soon as possible.
